Red Flag 08: MKI not allowed to use its radar?????
« on: August 05, 2008, 07:30:06 PM »
I read here: http://elhangardetj.blogspot.com/ , that its Russian policy to not allow Russian-made radars to be turned on during international exercises to avoid "spies".

I guess this is just fantasy and too much conspiracy theories, but i want to hear your thoughts on this.

I heard that too and when India's MKI Flankers went up against the RAF Typhoon's they were turn off.   From what I read the Typhoon was just too nimble for the Flanker.   I sure the US has the radar information already all it takes a nice friendly US Navy sub just minding their own business off India's coast to get that.

You mean the EF moved so fast that the NO11 couldn´t detect it and so it was turned off because it was no use ???

No not at all the Bars radar would pick up the non stealth Typhoon easy enough I meant the close in dog fighting between the Typhoon and Su-30 MKI Flanker, that supposedly took place.   It was said the Typhoon was too nimble for the much large Flanker to deal with.

I read in a different forum that while in England and during the training the Indian's didn't use their radar.

I guessed so, the Bars is very powerful, i misunderstood you.
About the dogfight, if that really was the outcome, then its because there was a huge gap between the Indian´s experience and the Typhoon pilots experience.

The size doesn´t matter, the MKI has hight T/W ratio, canards to improve maneuverability, TVC, good FBW system, IRST, HMS and the R-73, i mean, the Flanker is has everything to win in a dogfight, i don´t believe in that outcome at all.

I heard the sooks radar was in a "training mode" at Red Flag with downgraded performance, for the very reasons stated-ie."play your cards close to your chest" and don't give your hand away.
Hey-mpampis210, can I just click on that link you included and see that briefing? I'm going into town today and will bring my machine to the library where I can get speedier internet.
And Tigershark-Very astute of you to know that our subs are everywhere, but the Indians must know that, and probably use the full capabilities of that radar well away from the coast, and not during transit periods of certain objects in space, as well.

I thought some USAF pilots made the whole Red Flag thing up for youtube.  Thought the whole thing was staged isn't odd that you only see the one guy talking and nobody else?

MKI Flankers are a little newer design overall and should beat older F-15C is certain situations.  US missiles have a little better range but the Flanker was designed to beat a F-15 while an F-15 was designed to get into positions to shoot down Mig-25s, there a difference.  Eagles strengths are it's better systems and pilot training teamed with AWACS, better maintenance, etc the MKI in my opinion cuts down many of those advantages.  The MKI is newer like I mentioned above and aircraft like EF2000, Rafale, later Block Vipers, can give and F-15 a run for its money and win but the mighty Eagle set the standards.

Most Russian Flankers still don't match up the modern F-15s and remember there are only 60/70 Indian MKI's active, and less then 100 or so modern Flankers operational world wide.

Jamming also gives are fighters an edge and that's very classified.

I'm sure US subs have been in the right place and at the right time snooping, that why there the best   .

Hey- mpampis210, thanks for the reply. You won't believe this, but I live 20 miles from Silicon Valley, and we get 28k up here in our cave in the hills. Didn't get to the library, but when I do I'll certainly check out that video. Thanks for including the link. AFM magazine said in that letter from India that the briefing was by a "Colonel Terrence Fornof, an F-15 pilot and now director of the Requirements and Testing Office at the USAF Air Warfare Center at Nellis AFB". The letter goes on to say that "the USAF later issued a staement to say that Fornof's was a private briefing to the "Daedalians", a group of retired military pilots."

Tigershark, that's the problem with you toob-can't trust it 'till it's verified elsewhere. Either of you guys want my Raptor vs Russkies video? MIG-29 OVT, and SU-30, and Raptor. Right now I'm trying to compile a more comprehensive Raptor video with Nellis '07 &'08, and Miramar '08.
Russia has some very long range missiles, but I think only the -31 carries them, The R-37 with a range of 186 miles (head on shot, I'm sure) Sort of like a Phoenix, from what I hear. The Flankers are beautifuly shaped aircraft, but up close they look like they're made with tin snips, sheet metal and decking screws, compared to the 15s baby-butt smooth finish, that should change once production gets rolling. They seem to be aerodynamically superior to the 15 though.
Good point about maintainance and AWACS and intensive training.
About AWACS though, I'm concerned that Russia, at least, has developed an anti-radiation version of at least one of their air to air missiles, and it makes sense to put that kind of seeker on the R-37.
Happy New Year, all. May true peace break out this year, (but don't hold yer breath.)
