Old warbirds set to make an appearance

KUALA LUMPUR: Regular visitors to the aerospace segment of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition (Lima) are used to seeing the latest aircraft parked on the tarmac. This year, however, they are in for a pleasant surprise.

Nestled among the ultra-modern fighting machines parked on the apron of the Langkawi International Airport will be aircraft of old which are part of the rich history of the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

With 2007 being the 50th anniversary of Malaysia's independence, the RMAF top brass thought it befitting that some of the aircraft used in the past shared the same stage as the newer aircraft.

RMAF chief Gen Tan Sri Azizan Arifin was said to be the man behind the move to have the older aircraft on display.

The CL-4G Tebuan, F-86 Sabre and the A4 Skyhawk will share the tarmac with their modern successors, the Su-30MKM Flanker, MiG-29N Fulcrum, F/A-18D Hornet and Hawk 108 and 208 jets.
