Georgia 'under attack' as Russian tanks roll in
TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia's president said Friday that his country is under attack by Russian tanks and warplanes, and he accused Russia of targeting civilians as tensions over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia appeared to boil over into full-blown conflict.
"All day today, they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among (the) civilian population all around the country," President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN in an exclusive interview.

"This is the worst nightmare one can encounter," he said.

Asked whether Georgia and Russia were now at war, he said, "My country is in self-defense against Russian aggression. Russian troops invaded Georgia."

About 150 Russian armored vehicles have entered South Ossetia, Saakashvili said, and Georgian forces had shot down two Russian aircraft.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it sent "reinforcements" to South Ossetia to help the Russian peacekeepers already stationed there. Video Watch the Russian tanks moving into the area »

The events followed an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council to discuss a dramatic escalation of violence in Georgia and South Ossetia. The session ended Friday morning without a statement about the fighting.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said it was sending an envoy to the region immediately.

NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer issued a statement Friday saying he is seriously concerned about the recent events in the region, and calling on all sides to end armed clashes and begin direct talks. Video Watch more about NATO's attempts to help Georgia »

Carmen Romero, a NATO spokeswoman speaking to CNN from Brussels, reiterated Scheffer's statement. She said NATO is in regular contact with Georgia's president and is in contact with the Russian side.

Britain and the United States also urged all sides to bring an immediate end to the violence.

"The U.S. has been in discussions for many months with all parties to find a peaceful resolution," said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe. "We urge all sides to refrain from violence and to begin direct talks."

Earlier Friday, Russian military aircraft dropped two bombs on Georgian territory, a Georgian official said, causing no casualties.

In a letter addressed to his "fellow citizens" Friday, Saakashvili said he had mobilized tens of thousands of reserve officers and that the mobilization continued.

"We must unite," Saakashvili wrote. "All of us, hundreds of thousands of Georgians here and abroad, should come together, unite, and fight to save Georgia. We are a freedom-loving people, and if our nation is united, no aggressor will be able to harm it."

Georgia declared a unilateral three-hour ceasefire at 3 p.m. to enable civilians to escape from the conflict zone, which so far was focused inside South Ossetia but included aerial targets inside Georgia, Saakashvili said.

"Clearly they don't really have boundaries in their activities," said Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili, in an interview with CNN. She said Russian aircraft had bombed "several villages" in Georgia outside of the South Ossetian territory.

Tkeshelashvili said Georgian authorities are still collecting information on casualties.

Georgia was appealing to the world for diplomatic intervention, she said, stressing that Georgia was not asking for military assistance.

Violence has been mounting in the region in recent days, with sporadic clashes between Georgian forces and South Ossetian separatists. South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia in the early 1990s, but its independence is not internationally recognized.

Georgian troops launched new attacks in South Ossetia late Thursday after a top government official said a unilateral cease-fire offer was met with separatist artillery fire.

Lomaia said Georgian troops were responding proportionately to separatist mortar and artillery attacks on two villages -- attacks he said followed the cease-fire and call for negotiations by Saakashvili.

Russia said a Georgian attack on a military barracks left a number of Russian peacekeepers dead.

Pretty crazy.

I was at my brother-in-law's and sister's house today while him and I were in the garage and it came on the radio, I came here to get more information, I knew you would have something about it, Nonpilot.

I think it will turn into something bigger... if nothing is done to stop the fighting soon.

Any idea what the Su-25s were shot down by?? I don't think small arms fire can damage a Su-25 that bad, then again I'm not sure about that.

What kind of air defence does Georgia have?

Looks like someone woken up the giant.

This thing is just crazy, the last thing we needed was another war :(

P.S- Those are indeed Su-25´s, if they came down, then Georgia must have heavy weapons, the 25 is a flying titanium bath tub, it wouldn´t come down unless it was really damaged.

Well what im picking up is Russia say they have lost 5 aircraft to the georgians

quote from Sky News "Russian TV channel Vesti-24 reported that Russian and Georgian troops had exchanged fire while Georgia claims it has shot down five Russian warplanes.

"

This is getting very worrying indeed and its been on the cards for a while as well ,

this may sound daft but a certain computer game /flight simulator (Lock On Modern Air Combat) that came out a few years back uses this storyline for its fantastic detailed flight sim game (Ukraine mostly though) but the Causcaus area.

The US and UK getting involved , why dont our governments have a cup of shut the fuck up and for once stop putting our noses in , other countries like France Germany China have to start taking descisions for global peace and getting more involved , its the same 2 that always lead the way.

Kind of glad im British but another conflict is something we cannot possibly do, others have to act before the whole world accuses the same 2 of trying to run the world

Rant over lol  ;D

I agree with you my friend, why must we always put our boys in harms way? on something that perhaps may not concern us however for a country that is seeking NATO membership and wants to become part of the EU, other countries would expect "the world powers" to do something about, with this administration though (US wise) appears as though they have itchy trigger fingers, going to war (excuse my expression) just for the fuck of it seems to be the norm...

I saw those tanks role in with the ERA added armor on and was wondering if somebody knew for sure what model types they were.  I think T-84 types but I'm not strong in tanks.

The Su-25 is one of my favorite aircraft and yes it's armored big time but the engines could still be knockout thus bringing down the aircraft.

Weapons wise since Russia hasn't produced a lot of new equipment both sides I assume are armed/equipped about the same, Russia just a lot more of it.   Also since Russia been building up their forces on the border one could assume they have artillery, supplies, ammo, fuel, etc, to carry out fighting for a period of time.  I have to ask does Georgia have oil or natural gas?  Are there major pipelines crossing their country?  I don't know much about Georgia to be honest.

Russia has Su-24's in that region so heavier weapons could be called up if needed.

Yep Georgia according to press is a major obstacle for oil pipeline and according to news both east and west wish to have Georgia on there side should we say. Georgia is screwed really if Russia go all the way , but they now asking from help from NATO as there country is being invaded. This is the worrying part, the Russians have been building for years and now when the major 2 are heavily commited elsewhere a perfect oppertunity to return to old communist ways and take back what was theres.

I just making that up btw hehehehe

We all know the Russians are good and dont wish that at all. there is reason for this  ;)

I have no link and cannot confirm this but I'm looking.

Georgia To Declare Martial Law
 11:46pm UK, Friday August 08, 2008
Georgia's president says he will declare martial law shortly as the UN Security Council holds an emergency meeting to discuss the worsening crisis in the country.  While Russian and Georgian diplomats traded accusations at the meeting in New York, their troops on the ground traded fire with fierce battles reported in the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia.

Found another link but can't find an English page
http://www.vesti.ru/videos?vid=143324

Russia's UN ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, said Georgia was deliberately targeting Russian peacekeepers.

Georgia denied the accusation and accused Russia of bombing civilian targets.

Russian tanks and troops moved into South Ossetia on Friday after a Georgian offensive against pro-Moscow separatists in the capital Tskhinvali.

More on this on this link and good map of the area.

Is it just the Georgians that are saying they downed the Russian planes or has it been confirmed by a third party?

You know, considering Vladimir Putin was at the Olympic Opening Ceremony last night, he really didn't look as though his country was kind of at war  ???
