HMS Illustrious returns to Tyneside

HMS Illustrious – or Lusty Deathstar as she is known to her crew – has just completed two weeks training in the North Sea, a team building exercise between the 1,100 Royal Navy and RAF personnel on board.

Launched at the Swan Hunter yard in Wallsend in December 1978, HMS Illustrious was commissioned into the Royal Navy Fleet in 1982. After leaving the North East, Illustrious will go to the Mediterranean, to work with Spanish AV8B Harriers.
