AIM-7 Sparrow, and you are right about PASV mode of the Sparrow, but don't forget that latter variants were much improved, and a lot of kills of Desert Storm were scored with the Sparrow, I think AIM-7M was the most advanced one. It is not only the problem of missing the target, but also exposing your position while tracking the target. AIM-120 AMRAAM is definately much better, like you said, fire-and-forget, the missile is actively looking for the target. But the thing is the RNLAF didn't had AMRAAMs in their inventory before 1999, the first real AMRAAMs were carried only by the F-16AM (mid-life update). Ok, they ordered some in 1995, but it wasn't with the MLU (1997) that they became a standard missile. So that's why I said, AIM-7 for the basic A-model.
But I start to doubt whether the Netherlands actually carried the AIM-7 in its inventory, maybe that's why the US needed to base F-15s here in the Netherlands, because we even didn't have our own long range missile for on the F-16??
The AIM-9 Sidewinder are still carried, it's the L-model, but I think M-model now, I think earlier version were phased out with the F-104/NF-5. AIM-9X can enter the inventory at any moment now with phase 3 of the MLU completed and phase 4 being developed (with HMS).
