What Ka-52?   :o    AH-64D Longbow Apache!!!!

why have the most countrys the AH-64? Its the only one that is battle tested in modern wars.
Ok the AH-1 Cobra too, but with the Longbow Radar have the Apaches a advantage against  all others

What's the status on the Turkish Army selection? They have to pick between some of these. Decision has been postponed a few times, program cancelled and restarted. I think they restarted it again recently. The trouble is that Turkish industry should be getting the lion share of the production work, so maybe the US industry will loose this battle.

Talking about the Ka-52, how's that one getting along...? I haven't heard much about it since the first few pictures showed up. At least the Mi-28 is progressing, see the news about the Mi-28N variant.

Too bad the RAH-66 program was scrapped. Or was it at all. Please enlighten me.

I think, from the list above, the Ah-64D is more reknown. No doubt some Russian helo will come along with 10 times more explosive power and speed. But the Apache Longbow's just reliable enough for me.  ;)

Oh, yeah, just wanted to add. The other helos in there, like the Eurocopter Tigre/Tiger won't really get a lot of publicity here, huh? I think it's a pretty snazzy thing, though.

And the Cobra is outdated

Definitly the AH-64 Apache...and the Cobra.

I don't know, don't forget the new AH-1Z, might do 10x better than a AH-64A.

Yup, I love the AH-1 Cobra...and the OH-6 Little Bird
That thing going down the streets with rotary guns on the sides and troops sitting on the edge can do alot of damage ;)

AH-1Z. Yes, possible.
I like the Ka-50 design, too though, could you put that in?. Any idea why Kamov does them all with double-tier blades?

Yes, no tail rotor required to keep it from turning in the rotor direction. In this config no power is wasted on the tail rotor, giving more for lift, same for the Chinook design, although they are not in the same position. Tail rotor is in normal config quite vulnerable in combat, so that's maybe also a reason why they still use it. Some also say it's a less complicated design, but dunno if that's true.

Hmmm, possible. It still looks a little odd, though. And you missed out the Russian helo NATO named 'Havoc'. Con't remember the original designation: Mi-? Does anyone know? thanks.   :)

I love the Apache AH-64B Longbow and the Cobra AH-1Z, but I went online to Military.com and they have a few vids you can view - that Mi-28 Havoc, which sort of has the line of the Apache, looks like an impressive attack heli.  I won't put anything past Russian; they do build some impressive fighting machines.  Check out the vid on the Su-30MK doing some super maneuvers.  Oh, by the way,  watching the Military Channel here in the US, the AK-47 assault rifle made the #1 spot as best rifle in the world of all time.  Congratulations to Kalishnikov and his company.

Yeah, I heard the AK-47 is a great weapon...I heard it on the military channel and the history channel to.

Yeah, AK-47s are pretty good weapons.

Hm, so it's the Mi-28. I was wondering, what if Mikoyan was a stand-alone name... We'd have big name mix-ups.  ;D

It's basically an American attack helicopter deriative. Based on the same slim and sleeker lines, other than the usual wider shape of Russian Helos. I'm not the crazy one about rotary-wing aircraft, don't look at me...  ;)

Yeah, it's just AWSOME. I think they scrapped the program. Too costly. I think. That's what my friend said. (he's an aeronautical engineer)  ;D
Then again, the other stuff are expensive too...

they scrapped it?? Why?? that helo had a tonne of potential...and it looked mean- is it just me or have the US named their attack choppers after Native American things.. Longbow and Commanche!

They had a more pressing requirement for transport/utility helicopters. So the Apaches are upgraded instead, and more transports on the way... modern Chinooks (CH-47F), Blackhawks (all kinds), and UH-145s are coming, and I think they also ordered some additional AH-64Ds. I think it was a good decision, but maybe it would have been better to postpone it, instead of scrapping it completely. You'll need Apache replacements some day, but maybe they are counting on UAVs for the job by then...?

I thought the Commache was a recon chopper??

Commanche is a ATTACK helicopter with espoinage or stealth capabilities.

Native american things: They're basically tribes. The Longbow is just what it is: a longbow!  ;D
Google 'Chinook', 'Apache' and 'Commanche' You'll get some interesting stuff.

so you could call it a recon/attack helicopter.

makes sense giving a recon chopper weapons

like for example

a commanche is watching some warehouse in Pakistan (no offence to anyone) and they see OBL showing up. instead of waiting for attack choppers are planes to come in and blow the warehouse of the map, the commanche fires a coupla missiles at it, job done OBL gone..

nice theory, but they scrapped it :'(

Yes, something like that, except it's main role is attack, not recce.

RAH-66... means that recce was intended as quite a big part of its role, otherwise they would not have put it in the designation.

Anyway, Kiowas are more 'observation' helo's, I think serious recce with a chopper is still a bit risky and can better carried out by UAV or aircraft. That's probably why they intended to give the Commanche a recce role, because it would be stealth....not that angry guys with RPGs would care about that...

The Kiowa Warriors will be replaced by the Bell ARH, Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter, I forgot to mention these above. Pretty big order, 368 helo's for 2.2 billion USD.

Like we replaced out Leopard tanks with stupid Abrams.
And we ware replacing our F-18's with F-35's.

WHAT IS AUSTRALIA"S FASINATION WITH AMERICA?????????????

Oh, politics, i suppose. Singapore's using the F-16s, 5s, A-4SUs, F-15s coming, M16s, M-113, AMX, some other pieces of old vietnam junk too... Although our REAL tanks are all Israeli made and hidden underground...

Isn't Aussie supposed to be allied to Britain first, then USA???

Nah that changed when Japan declared war on us and the US in WW2. I didnt see Britain sending troops to Australia, no, we had send our boys there.

Did you know that when Australia looked like it was going to be invaded (never was thankfully) that Britain would only send 1 battalion of OUR soldiers back home. Ever since then weve been closer to the USA. and the Brits screwed us over in WW1, Gallipoli. Bascially, Britain has treated us like a thing to catch bullets so their precious soldiers dont get hurt.

The latest Leopards are also great. I think Australia still has/had Leopard I tanks? Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands have been cruising around in Leopard IIs for quite a while, and I think they were even improved and upgraded along the way.

However, it's funny we are discussing tanks here, when the topic subject are the most lethal opponents for tanks. Don't you think tanks are getting outdated, and any army having/buying large amounts of tanks is still thinking in terms of the cold war era situations and battlefields? It may be better to invest on mobile forces, fleet of tactical helicopters and attack helicopters to escort them and clear the battlefield of any opponent's tanks, if the air force hasn't already taken care of them!

The new Leopard is actually often named as the greatest tank of all time to date. In most documetaries, this is the information given to the viewer. But i think i have to agree with Cobra2, or they both share first place.  :)

I still think tanks a crucial for the battlefield. You have to remember that they are great to hide behind when storming forward on foot. You need to catch your breath sometimes and reload, so why not behind a burnt out tank. ;)

Seriously, they are great tools  to have during city-battles. We have not seen the last of tanks yet for a long time.  As for a helicopter like the Apache, it is still number one.

Thanks viggen, and I agree about tanks being a crucial battlefield weapon. And like you said about storming a place on foot...foot soldiers couldnt do it without vehicles like the tank when your under heavy fire with no cover in a desert situation...or a hill or field etc.
