Countermeasures can be spectacular
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:19:57 AM »
IR-decoy flares serve to counter infrared-guided surface-to-air missiles (SAM) or air-to-air missiles (AAM) and can be expelled from a craft according to an anticipated threat in defined sequences.

Whoaaa never knew countermeasures could look cooler than the plane itself.  ;D

Niels,
Do you know if flares would fool an imaging infrared seeker? I mean, it's SO obvious to the human eye, it seems like proper software would not have a hard time finding the plane.
I guess that's what laser jammers are for, huh?

Another question here is that all these pretty flares would only fool heat seeking missiles. What about radar lock on? Surely modern air to air missiles have some kind of a duplicate lock on system anyway?

Flares are countermeasures for heat-seeking and Chaff is countermeasures for radar-locking as it interferes with the radar.

Once a pursuit plane has achieved radar 'Lock on" with an opponent on it's actual main body airframe, why can't that lock on be maintained in permanency?

One thing I just read says that "staring infrared seekers" are not fooled by flares as much as the older scanning seekers. The Tornado's chaff dispenser actually cut the chaff to a length that matched the frequency of the radar it detected.
Remember the Russkies always used the same missile with BOTH IR and Radar seekers,(one missile had radar, the other an IR seeker) fired in tandem.
Also remember how we all laughed at the tail gun on Bears and a couple of the other bombers they had, because the gun had a "useless" range against a fighter armed with missiles? Well those guns fired chaff and flares to decoy missiles away from the bomber.

Imaging Infra Red seekers are deadly indeed, but forget about the advanced AAMs for a second, the main threat is Strela and Stinger type launched missiles. The Stinger uses UV to distinguish the target from countermeasures. And advanced Strela types use optical contrast. So yes, they may have dual tracking systems. But the cheap and most common Strela-2 has a very basic IR seeker.

@ Shawn. Uhm, laser is more commonly used to guide weapons to static targets, at the least, slow-moving. Laser jammers are therefore fitted to surface ships for example, not to aircraft. Not to track moving aerial targets, at least I haven't read about it yet, anti-air missiles don't 'ride a beam'. Laser doesn't detect in itself, so even if you use laser you need something like IR, TV, Radar or an operator to use it for tracking. But well, maybe I am lagging behind.

@ Aviator. Chaff has been mentioned, don't underestimate it just because the material is so simple, then there's jamming of course. There are also various form of more sophisticated decoys than chaff. Towed decoy is often used to emit signals to jam enemy radar, breaking the radar lock, and/or become the target.
