Title: F-15E
Post by: F-111 C/C on March 22, 2011, 01:39:39 PM
Lakenheath AB lost an F-15E Strike Eagle last night in Libya. It was flying missions out of Aviano AB, Italy. Both crew ejected safely but were separated due to a high altitude ejection. One has been recovered and the other is safe awaiting extraction. Officials say it was aircraft mechanical failure and not ground fire.

The pics I have seen of the wreckage are remarkable in that the entire aircraft is contained in a small area as if it fell flat onto the ground which, I feel,  contradicts the 'high altitude' ejection statement unless it stalled and flat-spun all the way to the ground at a low rate of descent. I guess anything's possible.

Mechanical failure or shot down ?

Either way, its good to know the pilots are going to be back in the cockpit  ;)

Glad to hear the crew is OK, (hope the one "awaiting rescue" is out by now)
Bummer to lose a Strike Eagle, how many we got left? (Bobby, think again, you F-22 canceler)

Wouldn't worry about that, "normal" attrition.

None have been retired right, so idk 220-222 out of 236 delivered (FY 89-01)?
