F-35 and F-22...do they have the same design?

They look very similar at least the X-35A and the F-22.

They look similar because they have both designed for stealth, requiring internal weapons carriage for example. This gives them the bulky fuselage look. Both designs have similar aerodynamic layout, their intakes on the sides, two vertical tails and almost the same wing layout. But they don't have entirely the same design, for example:

 the F/A-22 (as it is now designated) has two engines and thus a wider fuselage, also the F/A-22 engine exhaust have thrust vectoring and special exhaust which reduce the heat signature. the special angular exhaust are positioned more inside the fuselage, compared to previous fighters with a similar rear fuselage shape. the F-35 however has a more conventional exhaust, with one big difference, the whole exhaust can be directed downwards (on the B) , so the B variant can vector its main exhaust...this layout was based on the Russian YAK-141 and is for airframe commonality similar to that in the A and C variants.

also the doors required for the SVTOL in the top fuselage, near the canopy, give it that higher spine behind the canopy. The F/A-22 canopy has more of a pop-up position.

then the F/A-22 has a larger airframe, housing more fuel probably, the two engines each about the same as the F-35 single engine.

because the F/A-22 has been designed according to higher specifications in terms of performance (speed, range, systems, agility, max G), it is heavier and also more structural strengthening is needed, in addition to the extra power and fuel.

That explains a lot.  Thank you for clarifying that for me.

Although they share similar technology,the Raptor is an AIR DOMINANCE fighter-supposedly during the early tests in combat flight- an f/A-22 driver took on (10) F-15C s and dropped 7 of them in  less than 10 mins of  simulated combat.! I have a sneaky feeling that the F/A -18  Super hornet will be protecting the JSF (F/A-35) for a while as the JSF will be a mach 1.7 (1100 mph+) performer and will be primarily for ground attack and recon duties ,with "avg" interceptor abilities-like the A-7 corsair of the past.The US Navy is going to miss the true interceptor fighters like the F-14 and attack fighters like the A-6 intruder.If small regional conflicts occur and the F-35s and F/A-18  super hornets  are pitted against Su-27s,30s and mig 29s, they be serious dogfights-and the "best" man will win, not the acft.For the Brits , the JSF is a true winner as they haven't had a better quality Naval fighter in a LONG time-pilots will love it over the Harrier, and you'll see some great performance results.

I got this encyclopedia that says alot about Military Aircraft called "Modern Military Aircraft" by: Paul Eden by the book company amber. It talks alot of both aircraft.
