They escaped with minor injuries, broken ribs and the other pilot a bruised shoulder.

Some reports say it was a newly built aircraft on its first test flight, others say it was a test flight following periodic maintenance.

There goes 100 Million dollars, an estheroids F-16... the price also had some (estheroiods) too, it seems ;D ;D

I think they use it mostly for sea patrol or alike...

Some news I found on it there's videos on the net too.

According to Asagiri, the fighter was delivered to the JASDF in 2004 and is undergoing its first maintenance in 3 years of service.
The engine was from another F-2 jet and had about 1,000 hours. The aircraft itself has 740 hours.
The sortie was supposed to be a touch and go followed by a flight out to the Sea of Japan.
Test pilot Nagata Keiji suffered serious injuries and co-pilot Mizushima Mitsuo was lightly wounded.
