This is the 4th year if I m not mistaking.
-
Good call, I almost forgot about our annual vote.
2005: F-14 Tomcat
2006: JAS-39 Gripen
2007: Typhoon
Took the freedom of editing your list a bit.
-
Is this a secret vote or can we say what we voted for?
-
No, it's not a secret vote. In past years the most interesting have been the comment on why someone picked the plane they picked.
-
I voted Gripen... coz i always vote the Gripen
Typhoon was my second choice
PS, atm I hate Sweden.. They made Absolut Vodka.. and I drunk a fair bit of it... >:(
-
I went with the Rafale this time seeing that took part in some operations and seem to mature this year overall. The Typhoon was hard not to pick and for third that runs into many aircraft just too difficult.
-
I voted for the -22 just based on reputation, even though it seems a bit underarmed for the stealthy air-to-air role, and it's not truly multi-role until new multi role weapons are designed that will fit inside.
-
I voted for the Gripen!!! Croatian choice for future...

Seems like Gripen won again. :)
And I forgot to vote ;D
-
I haven't had my finger on the pulse of annual fighter activity and performance, but I'd vote for the F-22 for the same reasons as Shawn A. It's a true fighter and I think if it ever goes into a fight it will win hands down... unless they fly over the international date line...
The only problem is that I tried to vote and I got a message that the poll was either locked or I had already voted. The F-22 should have an extra vote from me.
If the F-22 project ever gets enough funding to develop a Strike Eagle equivalent I think it will take the title of best strike, multi-role and fighter aircraft.
-
I also vote for the Raptor (F-22) for not because it's country of origin, I just feel it's the most capable weapons platform. I LOVE the Gripen (I LOVED the Drakken). The F-22 has technology far beyond that of it's rivals, including superior fire control systems, Stealth capability, supersonic cruise (Mach without afterburner), vectored thrust. Granted, it may not be able to have a weapons load like a non-stealth aircraft but you can't have it both ways. Just my .02 cents.
-
The Gripen is such a sexy bitch! ;)
I like the red Croatian one
Reece, if you added your vote to the Rapto..It'd still lose ;D

I did add my vote to the F-22, that was a point I raised earlier. F-111 C/C also voted for the F-22, yet it currently only has 1 vote as opposed to the 3 it should at least reflect.
Voting for something that isn't the most popular isn't what matters. It's voting for your choice that matters. ;D
-
thats why i voted early, i was the second or third voter, its less dramatic
-
I heard somewhere that a Gripen pilot said that because of the relative lack of power, a Gripen couldn't keep up with an F-16 in a turn.
The Gripen NG should take care of that problem, no?
-
20% more thrust, but weight increased too...
That's why I didn't vote for the Gripen, first get some sales on that NG and get the new radar in, then it deserves a second plane of the year title.
I voted for the Flanker, because of its deliveries to Venezuela, Malaysia and Algeria (okay, two factories, not fair). And the first flight of the new Su-35, and second prototype as well. And Indian Su-30MKIs debut at Red Flag.
I didn't vote for the F-22, although this year I got really close to voting for it, because it didn't participate in Red Flag when the Su-30MKI and Rafale were taking part.
Not sure why it got locked, it's not Jan 31st yet. Perhaps one of the moderators (incl. me) accidently locked it.

Voted for the '22. I voted the Gripen last year. Come on someone else vote for the Raptor. ;D
-
The reason i voted for the Gripen...again. Is because i belive they have done an outstanding job on promoting and trying very hard to make deals during the year. Ok, a few set backs occured, which is why i almost voted for the F-22. But as it is now, i can only see a brighter future for Gripen then the F-22. ::)
-
*chokes* now i have to kill you, Viggen. >:D (when i'm free, that is... :()
Oh come on the '22 did a pretty good job this year, you HAVE to grant just that. ;D
-
Of course it did a good job this year, and the F-22 is starting to grow on me. But i still see it as an veeeery expensive futuristic toy for countries with too much money who wants to show off. ;D
-
Hello Viggen
I don't see as a futuristic toy for the United States to show off it's progress. Typhoon's are a $100/120 million dollar per aircraft are the countries unloved in that showing off? I rather spend the added $40/60 million per and not be seen on radar, nothing wrong with being the best or the hardest to lock onto. (smile face)
-
That came out a bit wrong. Those words were only meant to mess with Raptor a bit. :) But still, you have to agree with me that it is a very expensive project.
-
I agree very costly but five years from now it won't be as much hopefully. (smile face)
-
You have to admit the cost at least WORKS, Viggen...
-
So far it did, but now with the global financial crisis. Bet its going to hurt the F-22 this year, but then all others will be suffering as well. ::)
-
Unlike some of the the other planes in this comparison, the F-22 was not intented for export so I can't see how the costs involved can be compared. The F-35 was fully developed with export variants in mind so it's cost structuring is different and would make a better comparision dollar for dollar. We'll just have to wait a few years and do another poll ;D.
-
Ah Viggen... Think about the new democratic government. They might just do something stupid like scrap the F-35 program. After all, that's what many people were complaining about-the cost. (I think lots of people have underestimated how difficult a leadership job is but heck this isn't a political discussion)
Let's say, hypothetically, that the Gripen wasn't exported at all either. What then? :)
-
If Gripen would not be exported, then with 100% certanty. It would not be any Gripen C or a NG. They would of stayed with the first and basic version, and alot less of them.
The majority of the Swedish population would nothing better then see Gripen on the scrapyard and a total removal of all military equipment. This is how naive most peace loving swedes are. :(
My point to all earlier, is that the more expensive the costs have been for any of these new aircraft, the more they will suffer now from the crisis. Trust me, i dont want to see either Gripen or the F-22 end up on the scrapyard.
-
Ah right then. Let's say, hypothetically, that the Raptor were exported. That bring it to first. ;D
