Title: Top 10 Modern Military Aircraft
Post by: Raptor on August 21, 2007, 12:15:48 PM
I wonder if this will work. Ok. Without reading any entries below, reply to this with your 10 *most* favourite "Modern Military Aircraft"

After that, don't edit it. We all know the all time fighter favourites, such as the JAS-39 Gripen, the F-22A Raptor, the EF-2000 Typhoon, Su-37 Terminator, Su-27 Flanker, F-15A/E Eagle/Strike Eagle, etc. and the favourite bombers, such as the big and famous B-2A Spirit, B-1B Lancer, Tu-160 Blackjack, Tu-22 Backfire, etc, etc, etc.

Include a mix of fighter, bomber, etc, etc, in no particular order. The name with the most overlapping entries gets a position, and so on and so forth. Ties will be debated, i suppose, or chosen by someone who didn't go for that particular plane.

it was an idea. Let's see how alike we Milavians are.

ok, I'll start if you think it's ok.

1. F-106... just the 8th wonder
2. Su-7...sleakness at the limit!!
3. MiG-25... insanely BRUTE
4. Mirage III/2000C... another elegance item
5. IA-58 Pucara... It's ours, and for me, very nice.
6. Tu-22 (The real one!! with the engines outside, not the 22M) just look at its wings from above...
7. Hawker Haunter... can you say it is not nice? nah...
8. J.35 Draken... It has that double delta and is very special
9. F-4 short nosed versions... Ok, this one needs no explanation
10. Avro Vulcan... always liked its wings... not the owners :P

What do you think :)

I'll have to go with:

1. F-16 - Proven everywhere, anywhere !
2. Su-27 - The almighty Flanker, no further introduction needed
3. B-52 - Old, not bold, I think it's the oldest model still serving, with the first flights done during the 50s. That's quality !
4. F-4 - Who doesn't want to see Phantom phlying ?
5. F-14 - It was a flying barn and could be seen from dozens of miles away when it comes to radar...But could it be shot down before it scored a kill on you ? Sexiest aircraft ever
6. F-22 - That's an obvious one. God of flying machines for the time being
7. AC-130 - Pound it baby !
8. MiG-29 - One of the most formidable soviet/russian aircraft
9 and 10..Well, I don't like so many aircraft hihi

6. F-108 Rapier - CF-105 Arrow (Who said that only Americans can built superfighetrs?)
7. RA-5C - MiG-25 (copy-paste)
8. YF-12A (I didn't knew Martians had an Air Force)
9. F-14 Tomcat ( If only it had an appropriate engine earlier)

My top 10 favourite, based soley on aesthetics and personal perception of capability or potential:

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II didn't make the cut because it's not yet in service.

(1)F-15 Eagle......................Its an amazing aircraft that has an unbelievable combat record.
(2)Saab JAS-39 Gripen................This is one of the most beautiful and deadly aircraft I have ever seen. I love the Gripen!
(3)Saab J37 Viggen...........Really awesome, it has some history intercepting Russian aircraft and can take off and land on roads.
(4)F-14 Tomcat...........Awesome and also has history fighting Russian built aircraft and can carry the AIM-54 Phoenix AAM.
(5)Saab J35 Draken..........Sweet delta-wing and is deadly.
(6)F-4 Phantom.........Much history and was the most important aircraft of the 1960s and 70s. Very deadly and a MiG killer!
(7)B-2 Spirit..........Stealthy and carry an awesome payload of weapons. Can really level a target.
(8)Tu-22 Blinder.........Like Globe said, I like the one with its jets on the back by the fin. A sweet bomber.
(9)B-1B Lancer..........Extremely deadly and amzingly manuevrable for a bomber...and supersonic speeds.
(10)B-52 Stratofortress........Airframe from the 1950s and still in service. Deadly bomber even now.

The ones on the lower end of the list doesn't mean I like them less.

Maybe we should make the top 10 thing so you have planes from Russia, Europe and the US, like, you HAVE to have planes from each in your top 10

Not only that, the question was: Top 10 Modern Military Aircraft. So we assume "modern" means the jet age? What about non-jet aircraft that appeared after WW2? We need to define "modern" if people want to get picky about the little details.

Also "Aircraft" denotes everything that flies, not just fixed-wing, manned aircraft. Helicopters and UAVs fall under the category of aircraft too.

The list would start to get quite big if we list all our favourite 10 rotary-wing, fixed-wing and unmanned aircraft for each country.

I think that the pourpose was understood. Or at least I did. You have to chose 10 aircraft you like the most, trying not to fall in the same Su-27 F-14 F-22 thing ::)
Title: Re: Top 10 Modern Military Aircraft
Post by: Icarus on August 23, 2007, 02:39:21 PM
There would be a problem posed however with that approach: If we exclude the most "famous" fighters, we fall upon localized or aircraft made "heroes" for some reason. For example, american people wouldn't know or love the Mirage III because they never saw it in action. Similarly, most europeans wouldn't even remember what an A-7 was, an aircraft that every Vietnam War pilot adored. The same goes for the Kfir. Israelis love it cause it's theirs, Peruvians cause it helped them during their conflicts, but apart from that, the aircraft hasn't seen action in any big conflict or other places.

So the F-14, Su-27 etc. are famous for some reason, and there are some underdogs that were well known only locally, and I believe that most replies will be given with the "famous" jets only because with 5000 F-16s on the air today, and with it being on the news while used on every war the last 20 years,I think someone that likes airplanes must have noticed them at least 10 times :D

1. F-20 Tigershark- What a waste of a good design
2. F-15C- Best combo of weapons systems, engines, radar, and weapons, on a brute.  Sort of punches you in the face if you try to fight it.
3. Mig-29 - Good thrust not a aircraft you can overlook in the hands of a good pilot way underrated.
4. Kfir/Mirage 50- Big fan of these types to me a good solid step above the classic III model.  The French own the fighter world at this time.
5. Su-25 - One tough customer good range/payload for an aircraft of it's size
6. Mirage 2000 series - If France only drop their prices some and suck it up a little they might have doubled their sales overall.
7. Cobra attack helicopter - To me it all started from this beast
8. Flanker series
9.  F-16 - Could be rated higher but I'm from the US and can't go to the corner store without reading about one, seeing one, since I was in my teens.  Great aircraft does everything except slice bread.
10 F-111 & F-105 - Sorry to group them together both needed different versions to get better.   Take away the dumb rules the US had to follow most of time in the Vietnam war and their wouldn't have been too many Mig-19/21s left shooting tail shots at the mighty Thud's.  Talk about big and fast.

Left out a bunch
F-22 - Wow nothing in it's class
F-35 - Going to be much better then everybody thinks
F-117 - This aircraft change aviation as we know it and gets no love.   For almost 20+ years nothing touched it can you only imagine how good the F-22 must be?

1. F-22A Raptor, No surprise there for you guys.
2. F-15E Strike Eagle. I think most of you know my preference too.  ;D
3. Su-27 'Flanker' Yes, i do have a measure of liking for the russian a/c.
4. JAS-39 Gripen
5. Tu-22 Backfire
6. Ah-64D Apache Longbow
7. Ka-50 Werewolf
8. Harrier frs. 2
9. MiG-29. Hey, i'm one with the masses!
10. And of course the big and sleek B-1B Lancer.

No particular order there.

Yes, Grip, i think we all know what the subject is all about.

Lets wait a while before we finnaly compose the statistics, ja?

Hello for everyone! I'm new on this forum.

I'd like to take part on this poll......and these are not in any particular order.

1. F-22 Raptor - Simply the best air dominance fighter today.
2. Flanker series - There's no like it!
3. Dassault Mirage 2000 - A great multirole fighter which has suffered much of underestimation and of its big price...
4. JAS Gripen - A Great fighter for smaller nations with 5th gen capabilities.
5. F-15K - The latest  and the deadliest Eagle.
6. MiG-35 - Propably the best multirole 4th gen light weight fighter today with 5th gen capabilities...
7. F/A-18E/F/G Rhino - Carrier master....Especially after the Block II+ update...Amazing capabilites.
8. MiG-31 Foxhound - Still one of the best interceptors you can find, and still, so much mystery surrounds the plane....
9. Saab Viggen - Extremely good attack/reconnaissance/EW/fighter plane with features that sheaped the way for many modern fighters...
10. Eurofighter Typhoon - Yet the best European fighter...I say no more...

Haha, milavians, nice term  ;D. I guess we all wanted to be milaviators instead though.

Welcome to the forum, Osuorsa! (any meaning to that name?)

Tough one, but here we go:

1. Tornado IDS/ECR, I just love the way it looks, the noise it makes, the loaded swing wings, the colours of the afterburner, and it's one of the best low-level strikers ever. I don't care what others say. The ADV is not really looking as good as the strikers.
2. B-1B, I love supersonic bombers with swing wings, but this one just looks better than the Russians, although they are fascinating as well.
3. Tu-22 Blinder, fascinating aircraft, first supersonic bomber, ground breaking and beautiful design.
4. Saab Viggen, love this delta winged beast with the big canards, beautifully shaped and the original thrust reverser. Not to mention the splinter camo. Have you ever seen it do a short landing, turn around and short take off? It's amazing. I love its gear arrangement.
5. Su-27 Flankers series, for capabilities and all its derivatives, TVC versions and the awesome Su-32/34 bomber variant.
6. F-15E Strike Eagle and derivatives. I don't care much for the standard 15, but this one is awesome in capabilities.
7. Typhoon, tremendous power and agility, fierceful looking intake. I wish the tail was a bit less 'rounded off'.
8. A-4 Skyhawk, I just love this little bird, I don't know why, love the version with the 'hump'.
9. Mi-24 Hind, fierceful looks and ability to carry troops as well as destroy tanks. The way is moves is awesome, and the sound is so beautiful. For all of you who haven't seen one flying yet, I hope you will see it (at an airshow) some day!
10. I'm already at 10, and I have so many others to name! I suppose the tenth place will go to the F-4 Phantom, all versions, except the recce types.

Ones I left out:
- F-22, may be the best thing on earth, I don't care for it. It's like a Porsche Turbo GT or whatever, I prefer a Ferrari any day even if it's not better.
- F-14, used to be one of my favourites, but man, I couldn't stand all this crying over it being replaced by the Super Hornet. I'm over it and bored with it.
- Tu-22M, still love it, but well, had to give its spot to the Tu-22.
- MiG-31, maybe should have been in it, but I don't know, it looks just a bit too simple in terms of design?
- Gripen, sure good aircraft, but doesnt quite do it for me. The delta should have been extended all the way back. And bigger engine+bigger intakes.
- F-16, really should be in anyone's top 10, but with so many around, who cares :P
- Rafale/Mirage 2000, has been growing on me, mainly due to the many beautiful/exciting photos and videos I've seen of them. But in real life, they're a bit boring.

So now you got mine, go ahead.

Im still confused as why people call the Raptor deadly.

Has it actually shot down enemy planes, or is it still 'theoretically' deadly, not practically (aka LITERALLY DEADLY)?

Thanks for everyone of the kind weolcome... :)

2Webmaster - Actually yes, osuorsa comes from my name, Olli Suorsa. ;)

I also had some problems on choosing some planes...I had to left planes like Panavia Tornado IDS and F-14 off the list.....

The thing why Raptor is said to be so ''deadly'' -is becouse of its ability to outfly almost anything today! Its stealth performance togeather with supercruising and state-of-the-art avionics IT REALLY IS almost unstoppable TODAY (albeit not in future)...You have to understand (that you without a doubt do) that the Raptor is in its own class....And it is the only 5th gen fighter around....

I know i know, but it hasnt actually shot down an enemy plane in war conditions, so how do they know that it wont go spastic when its trying to fight and fly and save the pilot all at the same time..? they havent proven it so its not deadly unto they have proven that all of those put together makes it an unstoppable plane in combat

Ok. Basically, you guys have to learn to be a leetle beet less general. All the 'Flanker series' was dumped into a summary 'Su-27 zone', all the F/A-18WHATEVER was dumped into that class of aircraft, and so on and so forth with the F-15WHATEVER and others... Ahm... the A-4SU is a SINGAPOREAN CREATION. The original airframe is by Douglas. Thats all.

As you can see, the two most reputed air dominance fighters ever to have flown in modern aviation take an equal stand, with the F-4s coming in close. (actually those are quite cute) and then the F-14 and the F-22. Followed by the F-16 (no surprise), Mirage (Congratulations, Dassult), and ALL THREE SWEDISH FIGHTERS! Way to go, Saab!!!

To tell the truth, the F-15 didn't get a single vote in the earlier stages of the polling. It was quite scar, actually. Companies that got the most votes (through their aircraft) are:
Saab (3)
McDonnell Douglas (2)

The rest are ones. Thanks guys, now you can go gut it out over who gets thetop position.  ;D ;D ;D

Like that all the swedish fighters made the top ten. Perfect since SAAB is celebrating 70 years this weekend.  :)

Very intresting to see that both the F-4 and F-14 got more votes then the F-16. But i do miss the Tornado, shame it did not make the list.

Great job by the way, Raptor!  :)

I know...I'm sad that I left out the Tornado and other planes...but I couldn't fit them all  :'(

Anyway, Raptor, we don't have to fight over the top position....we know its the F-15   ;D

And I was looking through the first list and saw 8 in IIIIIIII and I thought that had to be the F-15 before even looking at the name and of course it was  :) (no surprise  >:D)

I thought the most original of us would win ::)

Ahm... the A-4SU is a SINGAPOREAN CREATION. The original airframe is by Douglas. Thats all.
Yes, but I like the re-engined RSAF version better. I like any Skyhawk with the hump behind the cockpit, and I saw a really nice one on the USS Midway museum last month (Turned out the photo I took was nice too!) But I'll stick to the nicest Skyhawks in my region.

(plus I was hoping to gain favour by listing aircraft in RSAF service  ;) ) lol

You were in the USS Midaway too?? My dad went there like 2 months ago!! I am planning to make a report on that, with pics and such :D :D

And about the A-4s, do you know the A-4AR? It has a different radar dome ;)

i hope it gets shot down (pilot ejects of course), seriously, prove to everyone that its a $180m waste of fuel and electrical wiring (that stuff is useful people)

Where do you base your opinion?

Oh, seriously Recce, that sounds so much like a suck-up. Well, i suppose the F-15 would take such a high position. Gripen, that's just sick.

Lol, the RSAF re-engined ones cracked up (literally) after the first flight. There was this event where the Hunter landed with a coconut tree stuck on one wing too. Quite hilarious, actually. And the time the Hunter crash-landed in um, somewhere, i think. They couldn't cut off the wings so they cut down the trees!

If I remember to, I'll grab some of the better photos I made on my trip. I wasn't just at the USS Midway. I visited a couple of other air museums in the area. Palmdale and March. SOme nice U2 and SR71s there, amongst a lot of other airframes!

Perhaps if you plan to make a report, we can set up a new thread on the USS Midway aircraft displays together?
