Title: Vote for the officlal name for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter!
Post by: Webmaster on June 04, 2006, 02:34:39 AM: It looks like the US DOD will come to a conclusion on the name soon for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Lockheed Martin's latest stealth fighter creation. It will be operated by U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as a large number of other countries, the most significant for the choice being the United Kingdom (1st level partner) and the Netherlands and Italy (second level partners).

I added the official shortlisted names, as well as popular ones (can always name it differently, as with the warthog or viper). Make your choice!

Winning name will be announced by Bush on July 7th, so be quick to vote.

Post by: RecceJet on June 04, 2006, 05:16:54 AM: I'm sure there was a WW2 aircraft going by the name of Fury, by Hawker. I think Fury and Cyclone are good names. At the moment I'm not hearing a lot of good things about the JSF, so for now I definitely don't want the good Spitfire name associated with it. :)

I made a poll on this too...would be interesting to compare PC-gamers to aviation enthusiasts ;)

Even though he was a professional and expert with animals, Steve was killed by a creature least likely to be aggressive, the Stingray. You can look at the Stingray's barb stinger as the "AMRAAM" missile - definitely able to reach out and "touch" someone, like the Crocodile Hunter. It is a stealthy sea creature, able to hide itself on the ocean floor and not be detected. And surely, the Stingray is a powerful creature, a fitting name for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is affectionately called the Warthog.

But I guess with the recent Tsunami disaster, it's bad taste and therefore bad for marketing. Also probably sounds a bit too Asian, I think it is a Japanese word right. Anything else with a T that relates to Tornado/Typhoon? Or any other weather type not used before?

Post by: Webmaster on September 19, 2006, 11:38:00 PM: Hellcat II would have been nice as official name, but maybe for the unofficial one we need something original. Thundercat, nice, reminds me of the Tomcat though, which makes me kinda sad. Maybe a navalised F-22 would fit that name. ;)

I don't like Foxhound II, the MiG-31 was codenamed Foxhound, so please don't call anything Foxhound unless it flies faster or as fast as the MiG-31!

Remember one thing, the US was completely outnumbered in that battle, but they still fought VALIANTLY and managed to do damage to the Mexican Army. It wasn't long after that the US Army used a brilliant tactics to draw them in and CRUSH the Mexican Army.
STINGRAY is still my choice, can someone put that on the list?

It is stealthy and can hide on the ocean floor w/o being detected. B-17 useto be called Fighting Fortress(what else can u call a 25tonn mass of iron with 13+ cannons?), so why not call F-35 a bomb truck or Suhkoi/MiG killer?

That's pretty cool. Also, there' s a picture of an F-35 w/multi-national flags on them - I apologize if I don't recognize all of them but here it goes -

United States, England, Australia, Canada, Spain, Turkey and what looks like Denmark and Norway.

USA/UK - Level 1
Italy/Netherlands - Level 2
the rest is still Level 3 I believe, although Australia might have become level 2 now also.

Spain is part of the Eurofighter consortium, but they might need Harrier replacements as well some time in the future, just like Italy, the one I think you confused it with. Spain has not joined the program though, and will probably buy off-the-shelf in the future if they do need them.

I hope they are delivered in the colors like the F-22, and not in the F-16 like boring scheme, which was applied to the X-35 prototypes.

It would still keep the F-35 bit, but it would be like the F-35 Lightning 2 or F-35 Stingray!
