Title: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Viggen on August 18, 2005, 04:10:47 PM
Now´s your chance to really think about it....What if you got this choice in real life, what would your answer be??

And for you out there who dont have the "need for speed", i also added a few slower and bigger aircraft.
Also tried to get a mix of new and older fighters. Did i forgot a special one, let me know before you vote so i can add it to the list.  :D

I chose the F-16 because it has been considered to be the greatest fighter ever made.

I know guys, it´s hard to just pick one. But thats the whole idea with the poll.  ;D

Vote for one, then just write down the top four you would like to fly after your first vote....

2. Mig 25
3. Spitfire
4. F14 Tomcat
5. SR71-Blackbird

Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Webmaster on August 23, 2005, 11:23:21 AM
Well, if you can pick non-existing planes (yay the sole Su-37 did crash), and stuff like that, than I am sure you can get a westernised Su-35 and don't have to learn any Russian. I don't think the Indians learned Russian for their Su-30MKIs, so if some country buys a couple of Su-35 they'll have english manuals and instruments installed.

Who cares about the money, kinda fun to be the person who gave the US biggest proud and secrets in fighter design to the enemy.  :P Only u have to hide in some cave in Pakistan afterwards.
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Viggen on August 23, 2005, 11:46:13 AM
Well, it aint to fun to know that the enemy have their hands on all information about your new fighter. It happend to the SAAB 37 Project, the russians got their hands on everything about it. Swedens biggest spy worked at the department of defence, old airforce capten. Whatever the russians wanted to know about Viggen, he sold it to them.  >:(
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Webmaster on August 23, 2005, 12:28:56 PM
Well if you spy, you can better make a good job of it, it's treason anyway.  ;) Some British army guy passed on some info about the vulnerable spots of their tanks, he got four times life sentence or something like that.
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?

His name is Stig Bergling, started to spy for several countries during 1969. The israeli´s caught him 1978 or 79. Anyway he went to jail here in Sweden, but then he managed to escape. Lived a few years in Russia, hungary and some other places. He got tired of being on the run since his wife developed cancer. She died here and he went back to jail, sat the rest of his sentence. Then after 11,5 years he was a free man again. Today he lives in some small town somewhere in Sweden.  8)

I guess the Russian weren't impressed by its Delta wing, perhaps they got their tandem main gear design from the Viggen. But well, it is always good to know who you are up against. The Viggens did a lot of intercepts of Russian aircraft, and even a SR-71 or two.

I guess I am going to vote for the Viggen, to get back on the subject, but only if short landing, turn-around, and short take-off are included. Otherwise one of the Sukhois.

Russian sub being checked out:

By the way, I corrected your poll. Raphael is an Israeli weapons manufacturer, Rafale is the correct name for the new Dassault bird. And while I was at it, I also gave the others their proper designation.  :P Hope you don't mind.

Yeahh..Now that sub is one cool story, U-137. Sweden were on the brink to go to war against the Russians those very first days. It was really close. The viggen on the picture is from my old airbase F17 Kallinge, a few kilometers from Karlskrona were the sub got stuck on some reef. Russian sub on Swedish territorial waters, one crazy morning. Though i was just a kid when it happend.  :)
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Viggen on August 23, 2005, 01:35:43 PM
I dont mind at all, thanks.

Yes viggen did a lot of interceptions, aircraft and ships. Coolest is probaly the SR71 Blackbird incident. There is a plak or whats it called at F17 from the US President Reagan, congratulating F17 for almost succesfully shooting it down.  ;D
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Ramon on August 23, 2005, 03:39:19 PM
Hello,

My answer is very easy.
Offcourse I would love to make a flight in a F-14D Tomcat  ;)

It is one of the most famous and most beautifull long-range fighter ever produced. The Tomcat has a superb performance, excellent manoeuvrability and a long-range weapon system. It can be launched from a carrier during day or night, whatever the weather condition is, it can attack multiple targets on an unparalleled distance, and has a timeless and beautiful body.

So that's, what makes it the best and beautifull fighter there is.

Regards, Ramon. ;D

With 12,000 Euros you can either fly with a Mig-29 or Sukhoi Su-27. A Greek company gives this opportunity but it is very expensive!
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Webmaster on September 23, 2005, 01:44:35 AM
Nah, the Greek company is just an intermediary, just like FlyMiG.com or Incredible-Adventures.com. It is really a Russian company (can't recall the name, and not sure its owners are Russian...) that provides the tours/flights.

You would have to be a wealthy farmer though to use it for cropdusting. But on a more serious note about the 747, we already have the USAF 747 with the Laser gun, which can shoot down interballistic missiles, so probably high flying planes as well, which makes it kind of an interceptor. Well and about all other interceptor aircraft are called fighters by the public :P

And the 747 fire extinguisher (that would crush the crops  >:D). I had a nice photo of it dropping red fire detergent, but lost it, so here is an Il-76 dropping water. And I think we also have a DC-10 now converted to fire service, photo was in the AFM recently.

This reminds me of the non-lethal weapons research, dropping/spraying a smelly, sticky, fluoriscent colour liquid would be an interesting way to combat troop concentrations in a non-lethal, acceptable but demoralizing way.

i voted the F-22. impressive avionics, covers good ground FAST, and low-observability gives it a great advantage, of course... Too bad SG'll NEVER buy stealth aircraft... Political problems rule. Not the way i'd like... :(

I chose  the MiG-29 because its a real good plane i think.

My other ones are:

Su-37
F-15E
EF-2000 Typhoon
F/A-22

I love those planes  :D

i would fly the Gripen.. Im guessing a Gripen in the right hands could shoot down any plane that any one threw at it

And what it the fasination with the Raptor? Its too expensive to be practical. No wonder only the US can afford it  :o

Although the ultimate fighter combination would have to be a F-22 and a F-35 JSF...Still no match for a Gripen :P

This is 'What would you want to fly' I voted just what i want to fly, except using the F-135 engines. ;D

Yes, the two put together would be the ultimate fighting team, but let's imagine this scenario:

Day one offensive:A) JAS-29s enter enemy Territory and performa succesful strike.
                                 B) Team 1 heads down, unloads it's bombs, then flies air-cover
                                 C)  Team 2 Heads down, does the same, then flies cover for team 3, just arriving, while team 1 bugs out
                                 D) Team 3 heads for home together with team 2, enemy fighters all taken out

Day two offensive: Enemy is prepared and with weapons capable of shooting down the Gripens.
JAS-39 lose the element of surprise, and sustain immense casualties.

Now, flying '22s, '35s and '117s (If you have cash),

Day one offensive:A) F-22s and F-35s enter enemy territory, with Raptors flying cover and 'Stingrays' going down-destroying SAM
                                  batteries.
                                  B) F-35s head home. F-22s hold ground till F-35s can regroup and are some distand away, or, optimally ,
                                  completely vanquish the enemy.

Day two offensive: A)enemy waits. Get's nothing in the form of F-22s or F-35s. Although these are low-observable aircraft, they are
not exacly what you'd use as a spy-plane or tactical bomber  ;D
                                 B) Nighthawks perform strike. Causes chaos in the infrastructure. Next  thing you know, The Raptors
and 'Stingrays' are upon you. (You can perform this without the Nighthawks, but seeing they flew 2% of the total
bombing flights and amounted to 40% of the damage in GW1, i think, they should come in handy)

So, all i'm saying is that, yes, these costly aircraft are very useful. Imagine pitting a Squadron of Gripens against some Su-37s. Poor Swedes. If i made a blunder in the strategy plot, don't look at me, i'm not Pershing. That was a quick sketch up of a plan. Try it in a command and conquer game, maybe generals. They've got a good variety of aircraft there...
I believe that politics, though, can really do the most damage to the country. Imagine, you've got a hundred top-of-the range Aircraft at your disposal, and you can't use them because people will clamour for you blood for being unfair. *shrug* it happens.

OK. Anyone i've insulted or displeased, don't look at me. Period.  ::)

just to clarify

when the F-117s attack, are the enemy still patrolling? If so they would find the -117's becuase they are only in stealth when they havent got their bomb bay doors open, when they are they still appear on radar, faintly, but enough to envestigate. the whole stealth princible relies on surprise. by the time the enemy respond, the -117s are gone, but if they have good planes in the air, then they will respond alot quicker and the 117's will be in trouble. they are not the most manouverable planes, and dont have an AA weapons on board- and escorting the -117 with Raptors or -35s would be defeating the purpose.
One plane is harder to find then 2 or 3...
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Raptor on October 13, 2006, 12:26:34 PM
The '117s would most likely have to fly somewhere between the hours of midnight and dawn, so as to reduce visual contact. If the '117 themselves make sure the air is clear before dropping, then, there would most likely be no problem at all.

Check www.lockheedmartin.com and www.Boeing.com they've got the two aircraft listed

thats a good point

but if some random enemy was flying around in circles and they some how seen a -117 go by (a person in a AWACS can see a NIghthawk even if his radar is saying its not there>>DONT RELY ON MACHINES, NOTHING BEATS HUMANS) then the 117 would still be in trouble. Radar-relying missiles cant find it, and it has anti-heat things (or is that the B2??) so shooting it down with a missile would be out of the question,,

THANK GOD FOR THE CANNON :)

Uh, night-time air-raid? I don't think AWACS field commanders did those...  ;D

Anyway, i do admire the Gripen for it's great design, but personally, it can't win the whole war unless it's used very well. How to is beyond me.

a great pilot could make the sproose goose into a combat plane...or a guided missile... imagine the damage you could do with one of those... but the AN-124 and the AN-225 are bigger arnt they?
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?

He he, interesting discussion you have there guys.  But i think its much down to tactics today, if you have the element of surprise on your side, you would shoot down an F-22 or a Gripen with the old F-4 Phantom or a J-35Draken. The tactics of any airforce is surprise, hit hard and then bug out. Live to fight another day.   :)
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Gripen on October 14, 2006, 03:59:14 AM
sure an F-4 or a Draken could kill a Gripen or Raptor, but the Gripen and Raptor should be able to loose the missiles and blow the -4 and the Draken out of the sky...thats if the F-4 or the Draken could get near the Gripen or Raptor, they both have good Radars and stuff!
Title: Re: What would you like to fly?
Post by: Raptor on October 14, 2006, 12:21:51 PM
Huh. Old and simple tactics usually work the best. So i'm not wrong. the idea is to make sure that the fighters remain untouched.

And 2/3 air to air combats today are performed outside visual range. See?

dogfighting should be up close, like WW2 but with missiles and at supersonic speeds

Well, then don't consider it a dogfight kill. It's safer for everyone that way.

A  safe dogfight... Aint that a contridiction (or however its spelled).  It does sound kind of funny though.  ;)

Oh, you'd be able to see the missile incoming... so you'd be able to eject in time. It's 'Contradiction'

and you don't have the crash possibility, so one plane has a 100% getaway chance. Unless the other plane has incredible weapons systems, that is...  :-\

Definitely, I vote for the Su-35, beccause of its speed and maneuvrability.

Down?  ;D ;D ;DMaybe someother time, for now i will lower her wingtips, and take her through Mach 3.2, while you are struggling to find out what this red flashing light in your cockpit with cyrillic letters means....i think it says " Comrade, the engine says goodbye......."

But, you didn't count it is the MiG-25 T ( Hi, I am Thomas, and Thomas is a famous Aeronautical Ingeneer, and he made some little changes in the engine... ::) :P)

No seriously, I am starting Russian this year :D (so the cirylic is no problem ;)) ;)

Seriously, I would be able to take you down, wouldn't I?

Well, Thomas, this depends if those big, tree-like shaped things u called missiles ;D ( i bet they are simply......fireworks) can see me...and bcz just before my ride, i would do some tuning in my own shelter (aeronautical eng too 8))...so...don't bet all of your money on that ever beloving Foxy Bat Lady.........for the Goddess Valkyrie is out there to collect some souls...........

ALL RIGHT!!! Raptor leads the way!

You guys are just hilarious. I'll take you BOTH down with Meteors BVR. And then you get picked up by the lovely Valkyrians and take the short trip to pilot Vallhalla. Where you can sim against each other 24/7.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the Valks are the "angels" and not the godess. That would be Frija, right? Sorry, I really can't remember that history lesson... And the soul collector would be Hades, right? Or was that Baldur???

I just can assure that if you saw me inside a Foxbat (that is, if you are fast enough) not even a needle could go in your a$$, pressed with fear. 8)

T

Hmmm i see another soul that will be taken to Valhala, and that is a Raptor... my friend i'm not sure if your  Meteor can catch me at 70.000 ft 3.2 Mach, but  i can supercruise at 3.2 while i doubt if you can travel more that 150 miles at 1.7...so you must be very lucky to see and catch me......i think you will be like a cheetah...fast enough for short periods, then no fuel, no duel....

Hades is a Greek God.  About Valkyries......check this

"The Valkyrie is, in the oldest strata of belief, a corpse goddess, represented by the carrion-eating raven. The name in Old Norse, valkyrja, means literally, "chooser of the slain." The Valkyrie is related to the Celtic warrior-goddess, the Morrigan, who likewise may assume the form of the raven."

I'm not sure you have many stand-off capability weapons... B-70. You go ahead and sit there the whole day while i tussle with your escort. Oh, GT. I really REALLY never respected the Foxbat. So i'll respect the pilot and stay relaxed but not too relaxed and gun you down.

Ok. Norse god. So I think it should be somebody else. Hang on. I need my history book.

You know modern technology performs miracles...it wouldn't be difficult to equip a huge bomber with some missiles......and a small a-a radar....and then...... beware of the big white bird...After all blackbird was also unarmed but nothing ever brought it down....how could a Raptor do it?

i have to tell you that neither 2 Eagle pilots respected that Iraqi Foxbat who managed to escape from them, despite the existence of an E-3 Sentry AWACS....and not only it got away (retreat u might say) but send them a present (some tree sized things that Russian think they are missiles).......Luckily, those fireworks didn't work, after all they were designed to shoot down the B-70, not a maneuvrable fighter, but can u imagine an AMRAAMski instead of them?

Hhmm...ok...but me in the mighty F-15 would have that MiG-25 dead...that is, if it doesn't blow itself up first    ::)
And about the XB-70...I'm not sure most likely absolutely not. However if I caught you before you took off or before you reached my service cieling  >:D
Also the F-22. We would mangle for a bit and the F-22 would be lucky to fight against the legendary F-15 Eagle. It would be more pilot skill I guesse instead of the planes although the F-22 would have a slight advantage.

Oh and now I remember why I left the forum for a while.

You should not have to feel this way Cobra, nobody does.  Im sorry if any member have mistreated you.  :-[

To all of you out there:
If there is any problems, dont trashtalk each other on the forum. Take it up with the webmaster or any of the moderators. There is not much we can actually do, but we will always support our members and listen to the problems.
I am not here to babysit! ( Can only speak on my behalf).

Ok, heated arguments sometimes get out of control. Understandable. Just remember that we are all here because of our love for military jets,  not political, religous or sexualpreferences.

If you want to argue about politics, im pretty sure there are other forums where you can get that chance to get these oppinions out. I demand that the members respect each other at least in their posts on this forum.

Like Viggen said, don't trashtalk here and argue somewhere else about politics, for example on the general discussion board or on another website if you can't keep it nice and within reason.

I am not here to babysit either, by the way.
