guys if gripen is able to fire automatically then it must have an efficient AI software so that it can smell the next move of his target as the gripen automatic system dont know what type of aircraft he is targeting..........I want to say that it looks impossible without AI software

Um... I think it has to be some form of AI... More likely something designed to just stay on the opponents tail (the computer, of course, can react faster than humans in many cases) and fire when in range. It's not like computers aren't that advanced.  :P This probably pushes the airframe to its limit (or the pilot's, whoever comes first) so that it can stay hooked to the enemy.

How advanced AI does radarguided missiles have to be able to track and engage the target?

I dont see a diffence in the basic software to make this impossible. As long as the computer has a lock on the target by radar, all it has to do is to follow it and meet certain programed criteria before firing the cannon.

Of course it wont go beyond whats safe for the aircraft and its pilot, but it is still a violent ride according to the pilots.

I concur with Viggen, it would be similar tech to modern missile guidance systems, just have to point nose at target and give some lead. But I think the pilot has to do some of the hard work first, manoeuvring into position, then switching on the AI.

That's sort of what i meant, except that the "criteria" bit is tricky. The computer has to calculate everything in a split second. Actually, forget about AI, let's talk Windows instead.  ;D Just joking, but it shouldn't require alot of "intelligence," is what i'm driving at. What do you think, guys?

Since i dont have anymore info on this system on either aircraft. I (we) can only speculate and that does not make it so or correct. I can give it a serious shot and try to dig into it some more. But im afraid that if i find more info, it would only applie to the Viggen´s system.

Im sorry guys, so far i have only bad news. I have not found anything about this system on either aircraft. I will however continue to search, checking out some of my old aviation-magazines and a few books.

Didn't the Russians put a system on their latest sooks and migs that would fire the gun only when it had a really good chance of hitting the target?
From "Mil-Tech Series, Mikoyan Mig-29"-- "Mikhail Waldenberg was concerned the gun wouldn't hold enough ammunition, but during initial trials, the gun refused to fire bursts longer than five rounds because it jammed. This was naturally worriesome to Waldenberg until they considered that the targets were coming unglued anyway. Further tests revealed that the whole system was spectacularly accurate and that magazine capacity was far more generous than would ever be needed." The GSh-301 30mm cannon in the early Mig held 149 rounds- let's halve the accuracy (10 rounds per target) that's 14 targets hit per ammo loadout.
I don't see why the Gripen wouldn't have a newer and more effective system.
If I were Sweden, would I tell anyone about it?

If i were Sweden... Yes i would actually.  :P I'm just going to do a nice long Google search after this.

(ohsosorrygrip. I'll be in the Canberra area for like a day only.  :() Mac OS X has quite a few stupid functions too. Perhaps we stick with windows for the sake of software compatibility.
