Italy's AMX fleet returns to duty after canopy modification

Most of the Italian air force's AMX strike aircraft have re-entered service after receiving a canopy modification required to lift a grounding order imposed by the public prosecutor's office in Cagliari, Sardinia last December.

Aircraft assigned to the 32nd Wing at Amendola air base and the 51st Wing at Istrana began to resume flight operations in mid-February, after Alenia Aermacchi developed a modification to fix a flaw with the type's canopy release mechanism. The work, which adds a further safety release pin, is being conducted at the unit level, without the need to return the aircraft to the manufacturer.

Italy's AMX fleet had been grounded following an investigation into an October 2005 crash, caused by a lost canopy.
