BANGALORE - Thales is poised to open price negotiations on its avionics modernization package for India's Mirage 2000 fighter fleet, a company executive said Feb. 12 at the Aero India show.

"At this stage both technical and program issues have been discussed and agreed, showing that the offer is totally compliant," said Gérard Christmann, Thales' head of electronic combat solutions. "The next step is price negotiations which we are hoping will happen very soon."

The upgrade brings the Mirage 2000 to a performance similar to the 2000-5 model flown by the French Air Force, but does not extend to the ground strike mission.

The package includes RDY3 radar, inertia navigation, new onboard MPDU computer, a new ICMS Mark 4 electronic warfare suite, and a glass cockpit, a company spokeswoman said.

The initial operating capability will include the firing the Mica missile, in the infrared and electromagnetic versions.

The Indian Air Force flies French and Russian fighters as part of a dual supply policy.
