Bell: Growing Interest in Huey II Upgrade

Bell Helicopter Textron says it is seeing increased demand for its Huey II upgrade kits and anticipates selling hundreds of them over the next several years. It sold 26 of the kits, which yield extended life and performance improvements, in 2007.

The major upgrade kit comprises around 9,000 piece parts and 900 part numbers, plus a new tail boom, rotors and engine mods. New dynamic components combined with the Honeywell T53-L-703 engine result in nearly 275% increased hover performance in hot conditions, according to Bell Helicopter's website. The upgrade also is designed to increase the max gross weight to 10,500 lbs. and should lower direct operating costs by nearly 30%.

The Huey II Modernization Program is the only available OEM-approved UH-1H performance upgrade kit. BellAero's U.S. helicopter facility in Ozark, Ala., has installed over 90% of the kits to date and is the Huey II Center of Excellence.
