WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - The Pentagon unveiled a proposal on Monday to sell South Korea a munitions and weapons package valued at up to $200 million to equip 21 more Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) F-15K fighter aircraft.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, an arm of the Pentagon, said South Korea had requested, among other things, 125 AIM-120C-7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles; 35 AGM-65G Maverick missiles; and 280 Joint Direct Attack Munition tail kits.
The JDAM tail kits, made by Boeing, turn gravity bombs into precision-guided bombs.
Also being sought by Seoul: two GBU-24, two GBU-10 and 32 GBU-12 laser guided bomb units; RR-170 radar jamming chaff plus a range of bomb parts, spares and related support, the agency told Congress in a June 20 notice made public Monday.
The chief contractor for the proposed weapons and munitions package would be Raytheon Co (RTN.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the Pentagon said.
The notice of a proposed sale is required by law. It does not mean a sale has been concluded. The sale would be worth as much as $200 million if all options are exercised.
South Korea said in April it would buy 21 F-15K fighters for delivery between 2010 and 2012 in a deal valued at $2.3 billion.
In 2002, Boeing's F-15K was selected for a 40-plane, $4.2 billion first phase of Seoul's fighter-modernization program. (Reporting by Jim Wolf; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)
