Helsinki - Boeing and the U.S. Navy have delivered a joint proposal offering the advanced F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to the Royal Danish Air Force in response to a request for information sought by Denmark in May. The proposal covers the delivery of an estimated 48 aircraft.

The Super Hornet variant offered to Denmark is based on the F/A-18E/F model flown by the U.S. Navy and the 24 F/A-18Fs currently being produced for the Royal Australian Air Force. The Block II Super Hornet includes the Raytheon-built APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar.

Boeing enters the Danish fighter replacement contest almost two years behind the two original candidates: Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II and Saab's JAS Gripen NG. Boeing's arrival adds heightened competition to what had been a two-horse race.

Denmark is scheduled to choose its aircraft in 2009, a timetable that will enable the Air Force to phase in new fighters between 2016 and 2020. Critical factors will include cost, risk, and the level and value of the so-called industrial partnership packages offered by Lockheed, Saab and Boeing to Danish industry.

A government-appointed Defense Commission has been established to ascertain if the Air Force should acquire new fighters, and if so, what the aircraft's main roles will be, and how many aircraft should be bought.

The commission is expected to present its chief recommendation to the Ministry of Defense in mid-2009.

Boeing has delivered Super Hornet proposals to Brazil, offering 36 F/A-18E/Fs aircraft in July, while in August Boeing offered 126 F/A-18E/Fs to India in response to its Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft program.
