BERLIN, May 23 (UPI) -- German fighter jets will help provide security at the UEFA Euro 2008, a soccer tournament that kicks off next month in Switzerland and Austria.
Several German Phantom and Eurofighter jets from the Air Force of Germany's Bundeswehr will help Switzerland and Austria provide security for the tournament, German newsmagazine Der Spiegel said in its latest issue.
The two Alpine host countries filed a request for transnational air surveillance because their own capacities are insufficient to secure the airspace, the magazine said.
Security precautions for the Euro 2008 will be massive, also because terror threats recently have appeared on Islamist Web sites.
Several hundred thousand soccer fans are expected to flock to the Euro 2008, the official European championships for national teams, which runs from June 7 until June 29.
