Iran Starts Production of Anti-Cruise Artillery
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran on Sunday started mass-production of a home-made 40mm anti-cruise cannon named Fath with a range of 12 km and firing speed of 300 bullets per minute.

"This weapon is classified as an anti-aircraft artillery for low altitudes and is used on gun boats," Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar announced on the sidelines of a ceremony to inaugurate the production line of the Fath Cannons on Sunday.

Najjar reiterated that the weapon is produced completely domestically and according to the needs of the Iranian Navy.

He also referred to the production of different surface and subsurface vessels, and said high-speed boats, missile-launching and PT boats and torpedo boats, different ships, hovercrafts, landing crafts with different weights, different classes of submarines and munitions, weapons and electronic and telecommunication equipment and installations to be installed on these vessels, are already produced by Iranian specialists.

The Iranian defense minister hailed the efforts by the defense industry personnel and felicitated this success to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and the nation.

In January, Iran announced that it has manufactured a smart 100mm anti-aircraft gun as part of a campaign to boost the country's defense capabilities.

"The Defense Industries Organization has completed the wholly domestic task of manufacturing the 100mm anti-aircraft gun and its necessary ammunition to counter aerial threats posed by enemy fighters, helicopters and cruise missiles," Najjar said during the system's inauguration ceremony.

"One of the most important features of this weapon is its smart system which can track down the target and fire at it automatically," he added.

Najjar pointed out that the shells used in the system were equipped with a fuse which enabled them to explode and terminate the target from a close distance even if they fail to hit it directly.

The 100mm anti-aircraft gun is an artillery system that can create a missile shield against enemy aircraft at medium and low altitudes.

Tehran began upgrading its defense capabilities after the eight-year war that Iraq's former dictator Saddam Hussein waged against Iran in the 1980s.
