Russian Air Force test-flies training aircraft
 21 May, 05:53 PM

The first out of a party of twelve Yak-130 aircraft ordered by the Russian Air Force on a government contract made its first test flight on May 19, Interfax news agency reports, citing the Irkut Corporation’s press service.

The aircraft's stability and sensitivity, as well as its take-off and landing characteristics were checked during the 32 minute test flight, a source from the corporation’s press service reports, with all the systems passing the tests without fail. The ordering party will receive the aircraft after the acceptance tests conducted by the Nizhny Novgorod Sokol aircraft factory have been completed .

The Yak-130, designed by the Yakovlev development design bureau, was chosen as the basic aircraft for advanced training of Russian Air Force pilots after beating the MiG-AT, produced by the MiG corporation, in a tender for a new trainer jet.

The Yak-130 is the first new-generation advanced military aircraft trainer developed in Russia, in collaboration with the Italian company Aermacchi, since the break-up of the Soviet Union. The aircraft made its maiden flight in 1996.

Algeria is planning to purchase 16 Yak-130 aircraft.  India and Malaysia are also considering buying Russian advanced military aircraft.
